Factory Audit Checklist

SourcingJune 18, 2026By Adrian

A factory audit is one of the most useful steps before placing an OEM or ODM order for small kitchen appliances. For B2B procurement managers, the goal is not only to check whether a supplier has a factory. The goal is to understand whether the supplier can deliver stable quality, realistic lead times, clear communication and repeatable production.

This checklist is designed for buyers sourcing electric kettles, rice cookers, pressure cookers and portable lunch boxes from China.

1. Confirm the Factory Profile

Start with basic company information. Check the factory name, location, year established, main product categories and export experience. Confirm whether the supplier is a direct manufacturer or a trading company.

For appliance sourcing, it is important that the factory has real experience with your target product category. A factory that understands electric kettles may not automatically have the same capability for rice cookers or pressure cookers. Ask which products are produced in-house and which processes are outsourced.

Useful questions include:

  • When was the factory established?
  • What are the main product categories?
  • How many workers are in production, engineering and QC?
  • Which markets does the factory export to?
  • Can the factory support OEM and ODM orders?

2. Review Production Capacity

Production capacity must match your purchasing plan. A factory with too little capacity may delay delivery, while a factory with unclear capacity may overpromise during quotation.

During an audit, check the number of production lines, assembly workflow, daily or monthly output, peak season schedule and available production space. For small kitchen appliances, also review whether the factory has relevant process support such as injection molding, metal stamping, assembly, function testing and packing.

Ask for realistic lead times for sampling, packaging confirmation, mass production and shipment preparation. Procurement teams should pay attention to whether the supplier gives clear answers or only general promises.

3. Check Product Category Fit

A strong supplier should be able to explain the details of the products they manufacture. For electric kettles, ask about body material, heating plate, controller options, capacity range and food contact materials. For rice cookers and pressure cookers, ask about heating structure, inner pot options, control panel, safety functions and testing process. For portable lunch boxes, ask about heating performance, material selection and packing durability.

This step helps buyers avoid choosing a supplier that can quote a product but does not have deep experience producing it.

4. Inspect Quality Control Procedures

Quality control is one of the most important parts of a factory audit. Ask how the factory checks incoming materials, production process, product function, appearance and final packaging.

A reliable appliance factory should have clear inspection points such as:

  • Incoming material inspection
  • In-process production checks
  • Function and safety testing
  • Appearance inspection
  • Packing and carton inspection
  • Final random inspection before shipment

For B2B orders, ask whether the factory can follow your inspection standard or support third-party inspection before shipment.

5. Review Testing and Certification Support

Certification requirements depend on your target market and product model. Buyers should ask which documents are available for the selected product and whether the factory can support CE, RoHS, LFGB or other required testing.

Do not assume that every model has every certificate. Confirm the exact model number, target market, test report scope and validity. If a product will contact food, such as kettles, rice cookers or lunch boxes, food contact material requirements should be discussed early.

6. Evaluate OEM and ODM Capability

If you need private label products, check the factory’s customization ability. Ask about logo printing, color matching, packaging design support, carton marking, plug options, instruction manuals and product specification adjustments.

For ODM projects, review the factory’s available models and ask which parts can be customized. For OEM projects, ask about engineering support, tooling discussion, sample development and estimated development timeline.

A good supplier should explain what is easy to customize, what requires tooling and what may affect MOQ or lead time.

7. Check Communication and Project Management

Procurement risk often comes from poor communication. During the audit, evaluate whether the supplier responds clearly, records requirements carefully and confirms details in writing.

Important communication points include quotation structure, sample status, packaging artwork approval, production schedule, inspection timing and shipment documents. For international B2B buyers, practical and consistent communication is just as important as factory equipment.

8. Review Packing and Export Readiness

Small kitchen appliances must be packed well for export shipping. Check inner packaging, color box quality, carton strength, drop test arrangements, pallet requirements and shipping mark control.

Ask whether the factory can support EXW, FOB, CIF or other shipping terms. Also confirm whether the supplier can prepare packing lists, invoices, certification documents and other export-related files required by your logistics team.

9. Look for Warning Signs

Be careful if a supplier cannot show production areas, avoids quality control questions, gives unrealistic lead times, refuses sample testing, or cannot explain certification documents clearly.

Other warning signs include inconsistent company information, poor packaging control, unclear MOQ rules and quotations that are much lower than market level without a reasonable explanation.

Final Checklist for Buyers

Before approving a supplier, make sure you have reviewed factory identity, product category experience, production capacity, QC process, certification support, OEM/ODM ability, packaging control and export readiness.
